BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – Former Florida Coach Charley Pell probably sealed UF’s probation when, during a meeting with an NCAA investigator, he defiantly balled up a sheet of paper and threw it across the conference table, striking the official in the forehead.
Mickey Mantle once played an entire hole at an exclusive Dallas country club wearing only his golf shoes and a silly grin. Draftee Shaquille O’Neal shocked Orlando Magic brass by engaging in a full-throttle food fight with his younger brother during an introductory dinner with the team’s owner and officials.
Those are just a few of the revelations in bestselling author Larry Guest’s newest book, “Sports Icons ‘R Funny!” The entertaining book was released this month in eBook form on Amazon.com ($4.99). A print edition is planned for late this month.
This is the seventh book by Guest, whose “ARNIE: Inside the Legend,” and “The Payne Stewart Story” made several bestseller lists shortly before his retirement from The Orlando Sentinel in 2000.
“Number six was a collaboration with can’t-miss Hall of Fame baseball exec John Schuerholz ten years ago. I thought that was my last,’’ said Guest.
“But I made the mistake of sharing some of these inside stories with friends over golf and dinner. They’d laugh and say I had to put all of these in a book. With little else going on in retirement, I took their advice.”
The book devotes full chapters of mostly unreported humorous and revealing stories featuring major sports personalities Guest engaged professionally and socially during his 30-plus years as a syndicated columnist.
They include Bear Bryant, Mantle, Shaq, Arnold Palmer, Payne Stewart, Bobby Bowden, Steve Spurrier, Lou Holtz, Don Shula, Joe Namath, Cris Collinsworth, Ernie Els and others.
After an advance read, Florida novelist Bob Morris declared: “Icons are funny? No, icons are freaking hilarious!” Orlando Magic VP Pat Williams says the book is “chock full of entertaining stories, one after another, from one of America’s leading sports writers. You can’t put it down.” Hall of Fame football coach Holtz declared: “I’m still laughing. A most entertaining read.”
