BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The 27th Annual Brevard County Long Term Care Symposium will be held Wednesday, and is sponsored by the Brevard County Medical Directors Association (BCMDA).

The symposium’s invited attendees include medical directors, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, nursing directors, administrators, pharmacy consultants, hospice and home health care representatives and facility department heads.

The doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and attendees will have the opportunity to network and browse the more than 30 symposium sponsor’s vendor booths exhibiting and promoting various health care services and products before the symposium begins.

The program begin at 6 p.m.

BCMDA President John H. Potomski, Jr., D.O., CMD, who created the event, has been a medical provider for residents in Brevard County’s rehabilitation and nursing centers, as well as assisted living facilities for over 33 years.

Dr. Potomski spends much of his free time advocating for medical legislation at the national, state and local level care for the patients in practice settings. For the time and talent he has devoted to ensure continuous quality, safe care and conditions for seniors – the most vulnerable demographic age group, Potomski was recognized as a Central Florida Humanitarian in 2011.

The purpose of this event, which is at no cost to all attendees, is to offer an educational dinner program for the staff of local long-term care facilities in Brevard.

“Twenty-two years ago, this program was started as an educational dinner meeting for approximately 80 health care professionals in long term care and has now grown to a spectacular educational event for approximately 500 health care providers,” said Jo Ann Fisher, MSN, FNP-BC, organizer of the symposium and executive director of BCMDA.

This year’s speakers are Malcolm Fraser, MD, CMD of Bayside Geriatrics of Boulder, Colorado, who will speak about “The Treatment of Chronic Constipation;” Joseph Shega, MD, of Vitas Hospice, who will present on Palliative Care and Hospice: Differentiators in Care and Prognosis Determination; and Kevin O’Neil, MD,CMD, on the topic “Cross Train Your Brain.”

Several pharmaceutical companies, hospice and home health care organizations, as well as some of Brevard County’s assisted living facilities and pharmacies will support the symposium as exhibitors.

“Without the support of our loyal sponsors, we would not be where we are now and I can’t thank them enough,” said Dr. Potomski.

As in the past, the final highlight of the evening is BCMDA’s recognition of an individual, over the age of 60, who has devoted at least 20 years of their career to providing outstanding long-term care to their patients.

The individual is nominated by their peers and selected for the honor by the BCMDA awards committee.
