Gov. Rick Scott Honors More Than 100 Veterans With Governor’s Veterans Service Award

FORT MEYERS, FLORIDA – Governor Rick Scott awarded more than 100 veterans at the U.S. Army National Guard Armory in Fort Myers with the Governor’s Veterans Service Awards for their service to Florida and the nation.

Governor Scott said, “Last week, the Cabinet issued a Veterans Day resolution at the Florida Capitol in honor of the men and women who have served our great Nation.

As the son of a World War II veteran and a Navy veteran myself, I know firsthand the sacrifices made by our service men, women and their families. It was a privilege to honor more than 100 veterans today with the Governor’s Veteran Service Award.

The Governor recognized the following Florida veterans in his speech today:

Maria Crosby
Crosby enlisted in the Florida Army National Guard on March 23, 2000. In 2002, she deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In 2003, she was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and in 2012, she deployed to the National Capital Region in Washington D.C. in support of Operation Noble Eagle.

She has received several awards including two Army Commendation Medals, Global War on Terrorism Medal and Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal. Crosby is still currently serving in the National Guard.

Phil Chamberlin
In 1943, Camberlin enlisted in the U.S. Army in the Signal Corps specializing in communications as a Lieutenant Colonel. During his 25-year career he served in Korea, Okinawa and Hawaii. He has received multiple awards including the bronze star medal, a commendation medal and the legion of merit.

Chamberlin has his amateur radio license which allowed him to communicate with people and troops all around the U.S., Australia and Japan. Chamberlin retired on October 31, 1968, which is exactly 48 years ago today.

Dr. Nathaniel Sheckman
Sheckman entered ROTC while attending the College of the City of New York from 1929-1933. Upon graduating from college he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the infantry 77th Division. He received his induction letter in the Army three weeks after Pearl Harbor.

The Army transferred him from infantry to the Dental Corp. After the war he remained in the reserves and gained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Sheckman retired in 1968, with 35 years of service.

Florida Veterans Medal
The “Governor’s Veterans Service Award” honors Floridians who have served in the U.S. Military. The front of the medal depicts the Great Seal of the State of Florida.

The back of the medal displays the five seals representing the five branches of U.S. Military with an inscription that reads “Honoring Those Who Served.”
