BREVARD COUNTY • KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLORIDA — Preparations for NASA’s Artemis III mission continue to gain momentum at Kennedy Space Center as another major piece of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket has arrived at the Vehicle Assembly Building.
Technicians with NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems recently transported the left-hand aft assembly solid rocket booster segment to the Vehicle Assembly Building, where it will become part of the massive rocket that will power astronauts toward the Moon.
The segment is one of two solid rocket boosters that will generate more than 75% of the Space Launch System’s total thrust during liftoff, providing the enormous power needed to send the Orion spacecraft and its crew beyond Earth.

With the booster segment now in place, NASA is moving closer to beginning assembly of the Artemis III launch vehicle inside the Vehicle Assembly Building.
Over the coming months, engineers and technicians will continue stacking and integrating the rocket’s components in preparation for launch.
Artemis III is planned as NASA’s first crewed lunar landing mission of the Artemis program.

During the mission, astronauts aboard Orion will test the rendezvous and docking capabilities required for future lunar landing operations, paving the way for humanity’s return to the Moon and supporting NASA’s long-term goal of establishing a sustained presence on the lunar surface.
The Artemis campaign serves as a stepping stone for future deep-space exploration, with technologies and experience gained from lunar missions helping prepare astronauts for eventual missions to Mars.
