Lieutenant Mark Oenbrink Retires After 37 Years of Service With Cocoa Police Department

Started agency’s first Community Policing Unit

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – After more than three decades of distinguished service to the citizens of Cocoa, Lt. Mark Oenbrink officially retires on Thursday.

Known for his dedication to community oriented policing, Lt. Oenbrink is credited with starting the agency’s first Community Policing Unit in 1995 and it continues to thrive today.

Oenbrink began his law enforcement career as a communications officer and during his 37-year tenure with the Cocoa Police Department he served in most all areas of the agency including patrol watch commander, canine, marine, traffic, special events, hostage negotiations, SWAT, support services, investigations, property and evidence and training.

“Lt. Oenbrink has served the city well and we are so grateful for his service,” said Chief Mike Cantaloupe.

“His dedication to the citizens of Cocoa and the law enforcement profession is impressive and we are a better agency because of his work here.”

Lt. Oenbrink moved to Cocoa in 1964 and attended St. Mary’s School in Rockledge, graduated Rockledge High School and later earned an associate degree in criminal justice.

In 1986, he graduated from the University of Central Florida with a bachelor’s degree in allied legal services.

During his tenure with the Cocoa Police Department he also graduated from the University of Louisville Southern Police Institute’s Command Officers School. He later earned a Master of Arts in public administration.

Lt. Oenbrink is considered a law enforcement subject matter expert. He is currently a law enforcement academy instructor teaching future officers basic law enforcement curriculum, a position he has held for more than 25-years.

He is also an adjunct instructor conducting advanced training in radar, emergency vehicle operations and is also a certified firearms instructor. He has been involved with Eastern Florida State College as an educator in criminal justice for the last ten years.

Lt. Oenbrink retires with the honorary rank of major.
