BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — A new exhibition featuring 80 pieces by women artists opens Aug. 12 at Florida Institute of Technology’s Foosaner Art Museum.

The Foosaner Art Museum, located at 1463 Highland Avnue (see map below) in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne, features changing exhibitions of nationally and internationally recognized art.

The art in Woman-Made: Female Artists from the Foosaner Collection was selected from the museum’s permanent collection. The show will be on view through Oct. 7.

The exhibition is sponsored in part by the John K. and Julia R. Roach Fund in memory of Judy Roach.

Woman-Made highlights 20th century women artists, including internationally recognized figures Miriam Schapiro, Isabel Bishop and Louise Nevelson and well-known Melbourne artists Susan Martin, Vera Sattler and the late Ellen Plankey.

The artwork covers eight decades of artistic production, revealing a rich diversity of talent that spans the stylistic spectrum from Impressionism to Minimalism.

Highlights include Schapiro’s large-scale “femmage” from 1986, Celebrating Women’s Lives, and Isabel Bishop’s exquisite drawing, Afternoon Conversation, from 1934. Both items were purchased by the museum with funds raised by the local group Aid for the Arts.

“Women artists have been a focus of the Foosaner’s permanent collection since the museum’s founding in 1978,” said Director of University Museums Carla Funk.

“Despite making great strides in the last 20 years, women artists are still under-represented by major museums in the United States. I see our ‘women-only’ exhibit as a kind of corrective to the historic exclusion of women from the art world.”
