BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – With Thanksgiving here, it’s important to remember safety tips when it comes to turkey fryers.

While this special day is one to spend with family and friends, it’s also the peak day for home cooking fires.
That’s why Health First and Brevard County Fire Rescue teamed up to provide a unique demonstration to show people how quickly a fire can ignite when a frozen turkey is placed in a turkey fryer.
Using a thawed one is the safe way to deep fry a turkey.
Between 2006 and 2010, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 157,300 home structure fires per year that involved cooking equipment.
These fires caused an average of 380 fire deaths, 4,920 injuries and $794 in property damage.
During this time frame, cooking equipment caused 42 percent of reported home fires, 38 percent of home fire injuries, 15 percent of home fire deaths and 11 percent of the direct property damage.
