BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA — Kamari Duncan, 18, is facing multiple charges after Cocoa police say he fled from officers Thursday afternoon, leading to a series of crashes on Merritt Island before being taken into custody.
According to the Cocoa Police Department, officers first observed Kamari Duncan driving recklessly in the area of Peachtree Street and South Wilson Avenue.
Investigators said officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop near the intersection of U.S. 1 and King Street, but Duncan allegedly accelerated and fled the area.
A Cocoa police spokesperson, Yvonne Martinez, said Duncan drove east toward Merritt Island, prompting an officer to initiate a pursuit.
Martinez said the pursuing officer terminated the chase due to the suspect’s dangerous driving and concerns for public safety.
Despite the pursuit being called off, authorities said Duncan continued driving at a high rate of speed and struck a vehicle at the top of the State Road 520 bridge leading onto Merritt Island, but continued northbound on Courtenay Parkway.
According to police, Duncan then collided with two additional vehicles while traveling along Courtenay Parkway.
The pursuit ended when his vehicle struck a guide wire, disabling it.
After the crash, police said Duncan and two passengers fled the scene on foot. One of the passengers was identified as a 14-year-old juvenile, and officers immediately began searching the area for the occupants.
Duncan later surrendered to a Cocoa Police K-9 officer and was taken into custody without further incident, transported to jail, and is facing multiple charges, including aggravated fleeing and eluding law enforcement and driving with a suspended license.
The crashes remain under investigation by the Cocoa Police Department.
