BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – As the holiday season begins, the Cocoa Police Department is reminding residents to be mindful of securing vehicles and removing valuables, especially firearms.

In most of the reported vehicle burglary cases throughout the year, and especially during the last two months of the year, a majority of the vehicles were left unsecured.

Between January 1 and October 31 of this year, 9 firearms were taken from vehicle burglaries.

“In many cases, this is a preventable crime,” said Sgt. Doug Levine of the Criminal Investigations Division.

“When firearms are taken from vehicles, they are used to commit other crimes. We want to make sure our residents take the necessary precautions to reduce the number of burglaries and the theft of firearms.”

Patrol units will be increasing proactive patrols in areas where vehicle and residential burglaries have occurred.

Residents are encouraged to immediately report any suspicious activity by calling the police department. For emergencies, always use 9-1-1.

For non-emergencies please call 321-639-7620. Residents can also send text or email messages to dropadime@cocoapolice.com. The information will be kept anonymous.
