WOMENS SOCCER: Three Florida Tech Panthers Recognized with All-South Region Accolades

Munoz, McCarthy and Svensson Honored

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — The United Soccer Coaches Association presented the 2017 All-South Region Teams this week and three Panthers were garnished with Second and Third Team accomplishments after phenomenal performances this season.

Representing Florida Tech on the All-South Region Second Team, Maria Munoz and Keira McCarthy were among 12 of the players that were selected. For Munoz, the honor marks the first in her career, while McCarthy returns for her second All-South Region Second Team recognition after tabbing the award in 2015.

Named All-SSC First Team, Munoz ended the season with a conference-best 75 shots, averaging 3.75 shots per game. The sophomore also placed seventh among the SSC for goals (6) and game-winning goals (3).

During the season outing, Munoz was named SSC Offensive Player of the Week after netting three goals during an overpowering win against Lynn on September 20.

Aiding Florida Tech in its campaign, McCarthy ended the season with five goals, four assists and three game-winning goals. With her numbers, the junior was named to the All-SSC Second Team. Additionally, the Melbourne product placed sixth in the SSC leaderboard for game-winning goals and shots (43).

Within the All-South Region Third Team, Elin Svensson received the award for the first time as a Panther.

The senior out of Billesholm, Sweden had a stellar season that saw her ranked fourth inside SSC for shots (46), averaging 2.30 shots per game in 20 games played. The midfielder also accumulated four goals, two assists and 30 shots on goal. During the season, Svensson was also nominated to the All-SSC Second Team.

The players have been a vital trio for FIT through the run for the 2017 SSC Championship title, a milestone for the women’s soccer program.
