BREVARD COUNTY • WEST MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A teacher at Central Middle School was arrested by West Melbourne Police on Wednesday after he had a “physical altercation” with a student.

The teacher has been identified as 55-year-old Kurt Kaufman of Palm Bay.

Police were called to Central Middle School just before 2 p.m. on Wednesday about a report of a physical altercation between Kaufman and a 14-year-old male student.

According to police, an investigation revealed that Kaufman grabbed the student around the chest area, lifted him off the ground and shoved him out of the classroom for being late to class.

The student had minor bruises around the chest area, according to police.

Officers placed Kaufman under arrest and charged him with misdemeanor battery.

Kaufman is in the Brevard County Jail and his bond has been set at $500.
