BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – He’s back! After several years practicing in the Orlando area, Dr. Richard Gayles has come back home to Brevard, and folks in pain will feel a lot better for it.

A recognized leader in the field of pain management and regenerative medicine, Dr. Gayles founded Lake Nona Medical Arts, an Orlando practice that focuses on healing patients through the use of their body’s own natural resources, thus minimizing the need for invasive procedures and possibly habit-forming medications.

Dr. Gayles will continue his practice in Lake Nona, but he is expanding to Brevard, where he has lived for many years.

“The goal will be for me to be half of the time in Lake Nona and half of the time in Brevard,” said the Merritt Island resident.

“I am excited to be back home.”

Dr. Gayles earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan’s School of Medicine.

He completed his residency in anesthesia at the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, before crossing “The Pond” for additional clinical experience in anesthesiology and critical care as a visiting registrar at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, England.

He later completed a chronic pain fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio, where he was named “Fellow of the Year” in 1997.

Board certified in anesthesiology, Dr. Gayles was awarded a certification for pain medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology, the American Board of Pain Medicine and the American Academy of Pain Management.

He is a volunteer assistant professor at the University of Central Florida’s College of Medicine.

Centrally Located On Merritt Island

Dr. Gayles’ Brevard office replicates the menu of services available at the Lake Nona practice. The new Brevard facility, which opened in early February, is at 444 E. Merritt Island Causeway.

“It is centrally located so it is convenient for patients from all parts of the county,” said Gayles.

Because pain is so complex, Dr. Gayles offers treatment options that range from traditional therapies such as peripheral and spinal cord stimulation, epidural injections and medications as well as regenerative techniques such as stem cell therapy and PRP (platelet rich plasma).

The use of regenerative medicine, which harnesses the body’s own ability to heal itself, but accomplishes it in an accelerated manner is particularly exciting.

Regenerative techniques such as stem cell therapy restore the function of damaged tissues by using growth factors to enhance soft tissue regeneration. However, the therapy may not be appropriate for the needs of every patient.

Power of Stem Cell Therapy

Natural pain relief options such as lifestyle changes and physical therapy in addition to traditional pain relief can be helpful for some patients, but for others, more traditional methods such as surgery may be required.

Each patient is different, as is their treatment plan. When it comes to regenerative medicine, Dr. Gayles has walked the walk, and knows the amazing restorative potential of stem cell therapy. After a surgeon suggested surgery for a bad right shoulder that made sleep very difficult for Dr. Gayles, he searched for another option.

“It was in my dominant arm and surgery would have put me out of commission for some time,” he said.

Stem cell therapy did wonders to ease his pain and allowed him to continue his practice without any downtime.

“I now have no pain and no limitations to my activity,” he said. “It’s what convinced me about the power of stem cell therapy.”

Dr. Gayles takes a holistic treatment approach that encompasses a three-part, multi-disciplinary model. Physical therapy and rehabilitation services correct physical problems that aggravate pain and render the patient more vulnerable to future injury.

Psychological services, if indicated, address the emotional stress of chronic pain. The use of traditional or regenerative medicine techniques, together with a balanced lifestyle plan, maximize the potential for a pain-free life.

“The correct diagnosis combined with compassion for the patient is the key to proper treatment. Upon evaluation and diagnosis, we develop a customized treatment plan to get patients on the road to a more healthy, pain-free life,” said Dr. Gayles.

“Our holistic approach makes us unique.”

Dr. Richard Gayles is accepting new patients at his new Merritt Island practice at 444 E. Merritt Island Causeway, as well as at his Lake Nona office at 9145 Narcoosee Road, located a mile south of the 528 Beachline. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Richard Gayles, call 407-412-5030.
