DES MOINES, IOWA They had to withstand a furious rally, but the 10th-seeded Florida Gators made some big shots and enough free throws in the final 90-plus seconds to upset the seventh-seeded Nevada Wolf Pack in opening-round play of the NCAA Tournament West Region at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.

Senior center Kevarrius Hayes scored 16 points but had to watch anxiously from the bench as his team closed out the hard-charging and pressing Wolf Pack.

Behind a red-hot start to the second half, the Gators surged to an 18-point lead over the Mountain West Conference champions with 14 minutes to play but the Pack starting slowly chipping away — then did a rapid-fire hack job on the Gators’ lead with a 9-0 run, mostly with full-court pressure that UF neither could handle or break.
