Former Congressman Bill Posey, a longtime Brevard County public servant who represented Florida’s Space Coast in Congress for 16 years and spent decades serving his community at the local, state, and federal levels, died May 9 at 78, surrounded by his family.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Former U.S. Congressman Bill Posey, a lifelong Space Coast resident whose public service career spanned nearly five decades, was remembered as a devoted husband, father, community advocate, and principled leader during a celebration of life attended by hundreds of friends, family members, and colleagues.

Posey died May 9 at the age of 79.

The memorial service, held at the Scott Center at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy in Melbourne, drew community leaders, elected officials, and residents from across Central Florida who gathered to honor a man whose political career began on the Rockledge City Council and culminated with 16 years representing Florida’s 8th Congressional District in Washington, D.C.

Speakers included U.S. Senator Rick Scott, U.S. Congressman Mike Haridopolos, Rockledge Mayor Tom Price, former chief of staff Stuart Burns, and retired Judge A.B. Majeed.

Posey moved to Rockledge with his family in 1956 when his father accepted a job connected to the nation’s growing space program. He graduated from Cocoa High School and later earned an associate degree from Brevard Community College.

Posey was first elected to the Rockledge City Council in 1976 and later served in the Florida House of Representatives beginning in 1992 and the Florida Senate from 2001 until 2009.

He then represented Florida’s 8th Congressional District, covering Brevard and Indian River counties and portions of Orange County, until his retirement from Congress in 2025.

Family members and colleagues said Posey’s legacy extends beyond legislation and political accomplishments. They remembered a loyal husband, caring father, and public servant whose commitment to Brevard County never wavered.

As the service concluded, those gathered reflected on a life defined by service, humility, and dedication to community — a legacy that helped shape the Space Coast for generations and left a lasting impact on the people he served.

Posey’s passing was announced by his successor in Congress, Mike Haridopolos, who praised Posey’s lifelong commitment to public service:

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of former United States Congressman Bill Posey, who passed away yesterday, surrounded by the love of his family.

Bill dedicated his life to serving the people of Florida and our nation with integrity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to public service. His passing marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned decades of leadership at the local, state, and federal levels.

He approached public office not as a path to personal recognition, but as a solemn responsibility to serve others honorably, faithfully, and effectively.

His legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched, the communities he strengthened, and the values he championed throughout his years of service.

Those who knew Bill personally understood that beyond the titles and accomplishments was a kind, grounded, and deeply loyal man who loved his family above all else.

During this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and childhood sweetheart, Katie, and their two daughters, Cathi and Pamela.
