BREVARD COUNTY • KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLORIDA — SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy successfully launched its first operational mission Thursday evening with a perfect shot from KSC’s Pad 39A.
Spectators packed Space Coast area beaches and viewing sites as the much-anticipated launch blasted off right on time at 6:35 p.m. EDT at the beginning of a 2-hour window after high upper-level winds scrubbed SpaceX’s launch attempt on Wednesday.
After the successful liftoff of the Falcon Heavy, the rocket’s three boosters successfully returned, with two touching down seconds apart at adjoining landing pads at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
The third booster, which went higher and farther, landed perfectly on the autonomous spaceport drone ship located off Florida’s coast in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Arabsat 6A communications satellite is made by Arabsat of Saudi Arabia.
This was the second Falcon Heavy launch since last year’s historic launch which was heralded as the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two.
