HURRICANE DORIAN 11 A.M. UPDATE: Tracking for South Florida, Projected as Category 4 at Landfall Late Monday

Could Bring Dangerous Storm Surge

SPACE COAST DAILY TV HURRICANE UPDATE: Space Daily’s Chris Bonanno discusses the latest advisory issued by the National Hurricane Center on Hurricane Dorian as of 11 a.m. Friday. The storm’s projected path continued to shift south with the 11 a.m. advisory, with the point of impact now centered on Palm Beach County with the latest forecast predicting top speeds of 140 miles per hour.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Hurricane  Dorian is forecast to be a dangerous Category 4 hurricane as it approaches Florida, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, Florida.

The storm’s projected path continued to shift south with the 11 a.m. advisory, with the point of impact now centered on Palm Beach County with the latest forecast predicting top speeds of 140 miles per hour.

As of 11 a.m. Friday, Dorian has strengthened to a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph.

Dorian is expected to become a major hurricane Friday and is on track to make landfall late Monday or early Tuesday, possibly as a Category 4.

Hurricane Dorian is expected to intensify into a Category 3 hurricane Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

According to the National Weather Service, Dorian could bring a triple-threat of dangers” to the state, including a “life-threatening storm surge, devastating hurricane-force winds and heavy rains.

All of Florida is under a state of emergency and Gov. Ron DeSantis ais urging residents to stockpile a week’s worth of food and supplies.

DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for all 67 Florida counties and the state has 819,000 gallons of water and 1.8 million meals ready for distribution.

National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said a Category 4 storm like this striking Florida could produce a storm surge of 10-foot or greater.

Residents should have their hurricane plan in place and listen to the advice given by local emergency officials.

“All indications are that by this Labor Day weekend, a powerful hurricane will be near or over the Florida peninsula,” the National Hurricane Center said.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 19-189, declaring a state of emergency for counties in the path of Hurricane Dorian.

“It’s important for Floridians on the East Coast to monitor this storm closely. Every Florida resident should have seven days of supplies, including food, water and medicine, and should have a plan in case of disaster. I will continue to monitor Hurricane Dorian closely with emergency management officials. The state stands ready to support all counties along the coast as they prepare.”

On Friday, showers are likely and possibly a thunderstorm, with skies mostly cloudy, and a high near 89. East winds will be around 10 mph and the chance of precipitation is 60%.

New rainfall amounts will be between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

On Friday night, the forecast calls for a chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight, then a slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 78. East wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 88. East wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 79. East wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Sunday: Tropical storm conditions possible. A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 88.

Wednesday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Cloudy, with a low around 76. Windy, with a south southwest wind 20 to 30 mph decreasing to 10 to 20 mph in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph.

Thursday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 88. West southwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
