BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Space Coast Tourist Development Tax collections hit nearly $1.5 million in June, generating $1.499 million, which is a 13.2 percent increase over June 2018 – and 6.2 percent over the budget.
Tourism is a $2.1 billion-a-year industry in Brevard County and is responsible for more than 26,000 jobs.
This tax, which is projected to generate about $17 million this year, is collected by the Brevard County Tax Collector and is in addition to the 7 percent State of Florida Sales and Use Tax remitted to the Florida Department of Revenue.
Total tax collections so far this year, September 2018 through June 2019, were $12.3 million which is 3.1 percent over the prior year and .6 percent over budget.
“We continue to have positive results coming out of the Spring season and into our Summer window,” said Peter Cranis, Executive Director of the Space Coast Office of Tourism.
“It speaks to the health of the economy and the continued interest in the space industry and our beaches.”
The Brevard County Tourist Development Council was established to promote growth, development and quality of tourism on the Space Coast and consists of nine members appointed by the Brevard County Commission.
The TDC oversees the Tourist Development Tax (Resort Tax), a 5 percent tax on the total rental amount collected from every person or other party who rents, leases, or lets for consideration living quarters or accommodation in any hotel, apartment hotel, motel, resort motel, apartment, apartment motel, rooming house, mobile home park, recreational vehicle park, or condominiums for a period of 6 months or less.
The Space Coast Office of Tourism is the body responsible for the marketing of tourism operations in Brevard County, Florida.
The office is funded through the tourism tax, which is then used to provide advertising and marketing for the region and to develop tourism-related programs.
