BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Students from Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, Westshore Junior/Senior High School and Eau Gallie High School gathered at EGHS on Saturday morning as a drone racing league jamboree was held.

The jamboree marked the first event of any drone race league that is supported by clubs inside Brevard Public Schools, according to Brevard County School Board member Matt Susin.

“It also includes all of the private schools and home schools in the area,” Susin said.

“We are not going to exclude any individual from this and it’s going to be one of the most amazing experiences for these kids.”

As part of races at schools, pilots of the drones were tasked with navigating their drone through hoops that were stationed between about 5 and 20 feet off the ground before ultimately landing the drone on a small stand to complete their rounds.

That the competition was held in an aviation hangar at the school was also noteworthy.

“This is the only aviation hangar in the United States that’s attached to a high school and the instructor, Bill McInnish, was recruited out of Alabama to teach these classes,” Susin said.
