'There is a reason those speed humps were put there. People were dying'

Representative Thad Altman on Thursday called on the Brevard County Commission to immediately reinstall the speed humps on South Tropical Trail that had been removed in order to resurface the road. “This is an issue that is personal to me,” said Altman. “Prior to the installation of the original speed humps, I have close friends who died on that road.”

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Representative Thad Altman on Thursday called on the Brevard County Commission to immediately reinstall the speed humps on South Tropical Trail that had been removed in order to resurface the road.

This announcement comes in light of a recent accident that occurred Thursday morning, stopping traffic in both directions on South Tropical Trail.

“I strongly urge the Brevard County Commission to consider the negative impacts on public safety that the lack of speed restricting devices has on this roadway,” said Altman.

“South Tropical Trail is not just used daily by motorists but is one of, if not the most, popular stretches in Brevard County for running, walking, and biking.”

Altman said in a press release that now that the resurfacing has been completed since this past spring and “many are shocked that the speed humps have not been reinstalled.”

Over the last few days, Altman has met with constituents who live along South Tropical Trail and pedestrians who frequent the street that and have said they want the speed humps reinstalled.

“This is an issue that is personal to me,” said Altman.

“Prior to the installation of the original speed humps, I have close friends who died on that road.

“There is a reason those speed humps were put there. People were dying. And if they’re not reinstalled, today’s accident shows that more people will die. This is a matter of public safety, and I strongly urge the Brevard County Commission to do the right thing and replace the speed humps as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
