POLICE: Suspect set fire that engulfed a campsite

BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – Titusville police have arrested 60-year-old Barrett Antoine Bickers of Cocoa for attempted first-degree murder and arson.

According to Titusville Police PIO Amy Matthew, Bickers was charged with Attempted First Degree Premeditated Murder, Arson to a Structure or Vehicle and Intentional or Reckless Burning of Lands.

“At approximately 10:30 p.m. on Friday, October 4, the Titusville Police Department and the Titusville Fire Department responded at a report of a fire in a wooded area near the 4200 block of Hopkins Avenue,” said Matthews.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that a fire engulfed a campsite where a victim was sleeping. The victim was able to escape just as flames reached his dwelling.”

Matthews said that witness statements revealed that the campsite fire was intentional set by the suspect.

“Investigative leads helped detectives identify the suspect, who was located on Tuesday morning, October 8, and taken into custody without incident.

The victim was not injured.

Bickers was booked into the Brevard County Jail and is being held without bond.
