BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Chasing the American Dream can become a nightmare for individuals who have so much to offer their new country, but who are being hampered by their language skills.

Colombian native and former United States Army paratrooper Javier Molinares knew the struggle it can be to learn a new language, so with the help of Blanca Garcia, Brevard County Public Schools liaison for English as a Second language students, Molinares in 2013 started the Brevard Hispanic Center to help adults get a better grasp of English.

“We raise their level of skills in English so they can get a good job,” said Molinares. “These individuals are very qualified but they have a language barrier.”

In six years, the South Brevard nonprofit that Molinares launched has grown well beyond teaching a new language.

Retired physician Dr. Freddy De La Cruz volunteered to man a weekly clinic that provides medical help for any individual without health insurance, whether they are Hispanic or not.

“Many of these people would go to the emergency room to get assistance,” explained Molinares.

“Now they can come here. We’re helping to keep people without real medical emergencies from burdening the emergency room.”

De La Cruz has been joined by Dr. Jose Luis Garcia from Health First, both assisted by volunteer nurse Dena Bruno. The Florida Department of Health helps to defray the costs of running the clinic.

Because legal concerns can be particularly challenging for low-income families or individuals trying to make a new life for themselves in America, the Brevard Hispanic Center also partnered with attorneys David Stoller and Tony Hernandez, who volunteer their time in the Center’s legal clinic.

The organization also helps with a wide range of issues, from job searches and working with the police department when cases of human trafficking are suspected to helping new United States residents become citizens.

“We help those who qualify with the application and the citizenship exam,” said Molinares.

The Center depends on a strong volunteer base and proceeds from events such as the popular Viva Brevard! Fiesta for funding.

As Brevard’s population continues to grow in numbers and diversity, so does the support of the Brevard Hispanic Center.
