OBITUARY: Former Titusville Fire Chief Richard Cherry, 77, Passes Away Surrounded by Family Nov. 20

BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – Richard Cherry, 77,  of Titusville, Florida, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 20, 2019, surrounded by loved ones.

Born in 1942, Richard moved to Titusville at 13 years of age.

He started with the Titusville Fire Department on October 3, 1967, and was with them for 32 years, where he served as Fire Chief for 16 of those years.

Richard was President of both Brevard Fire Chief’s Association and Florida Fire Chief’s Association. He was elected Fire Chief of the Year for the state of Florida in 1990.

He also worked as a lobbyist in Tallahassee for the Florida Fire Chief’s Association. Richard worked tirelessly for our community and later became President of the Titusville Rotary Club.

After retirement, he worked for First United Methodist Church of Titusville as building manager and volunteered his time for Habitat for Humanity and Parrish Medical Center for several years.

Richard met his wife, Brenda Cherry, in high school and the two were married in 1961. Together, they raised two children: Shawna and Steven.

He loved hot rods and drag racing. The Golden Goat was his favorite racecar. He also loved to cook, dance, serve the community and spend time with family and friends.

Richard Cherry started with the Titusville Fire Department on October 3, 1967, and was with them for 32 years, where he served as Fire Chief for 16 of those years.

Richard was a pillar in our community and devoted his life to serving others.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Brenda Cherry; children: Shawna Cherry (Jeff Johnson) and Steven Cherry (Tanya); two grandchildren: Justin Parris (Katie) and Caleigh Simpson (Matt); and four great-grandchildren: Emma Parris, Ella Parris, MaKenzie Simpson, and McCoy Simpson.

Richard was greeted in Heaven by: John Cyril Cherry (father) and Lucile Buck Cherry (mother).

A celebration of life will be held at First United Methodist Church of Titusville at 206 South Hopkins Avenue on December 7, 2019 at 11 a.m.

Reception to follow in Fellowship Hall.
