BREVARD COUNTY • PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, FLORIDA – Brig. Gen. Douglas Schiess, the commander of the 45th Space Wing and directs the Eastern Range, announced Friday that Patrick Air Force Base and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station will be renamed Patrick Space Force Base and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
President Donald Trump recently unveiled the logo for the newly created Space Force, the sixth branch of the U.S. armed forces.
The name change of the longtime Brevard County U.S. Air Force installations is due to the creation of the U.S. Space Force last year by President Trump.
Schiess did not say when the change will go into effect as he made the announcement during the annual State of the Installation on Friday morning.
Schiess is responsible for more than 15,000 military, Department of Defense civilian and contracted personnel.
As the commander he leads the safe and secure processing and launching of U.S. government and commercial satellites from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.
General Schiess is also the final approval authority for all launches on the Eastern Range, a 15-million-square-mile area that supports an average of 25 launches per year aboard Delta, Atlas, Falcon, Navy and emerging launch vehicles.
In addition, he manages wing launch and range infrastructure supporting NASA, commercial and missile test missions.
