BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Melbourne Police Department released a statement Monday night assuring the public that MPD personnel are aware of a social media posting in regards to rumors of a student bringing a firearm to the Croton Elementary School campus on Tuesday.
“Officers and Detectives have been actively working with parents and faculty of Croton Elementary School to identify and locate the juvenile involved in making the statement,” said Melbourne Police Lt. Brian Hart.
Croton Elementary School is located at 1449 Croton Road and Brevard County Public School Security has been notified and is aware of the investigation.
“Through the cooperation of school faculty, Brevard Schools Security, and concerned parents, the involved student has been identified and located. Detectives have made contact with the student and the student’s family,” said Lt. Hart.
“Detectives conducted a thorough investigation and completed a threat assessment. The investigation determined there does not appear to be any credible threat behind the statement made by the student.
“We have alerted Croton Elementary Administration and the Brevard County Schools Security Office of our findings. We do not believe there is a need to keep kids out of school solely based upon the student’s statements.
“We would like to thank the many concerned parents who reached out to us directly about this case.
“As always, we encourage families to utilize this time to have an open dialogue with their students about how statements made in jest or otherwise can have larger and sometimes unforeseen consequences,” Lt. Hart concluded.
