Gilbert & Sullivan musical classic runs March 13 through 29 at Surfside Playhouse

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA – The Gilbert & Sullivan musical comedy classic, Pirates of Penzance opens Friday, March 13 during the 60th Anniversary Season of the Surfside Playhouse in Cocoa Beach.
Set on the coast of Victorian-era Cornwall, a gang of not-so-fierce pirates play and party as Frederic (a pirate apprentice played by Anthony Detrano) reminds the pirate king (newcomer Addison Wolfe) that his obligation to the gang is soon over. And when 21 and no longer a pirate, it will be his duty to destroy them.
Add the love of Mabel (played by Katie McCall), a leap year and Surfside’s own twists and turns– and the resulting tale is a song-filled performance with unexpected outcomes.
Veteran actor Rob Dickman will be reprising the role of the silly Major General for the fourth time. And the audience can expect to be wowed by the polished vocals of alto Dorothy Wright-Sontag (Ruth) and soprano Katie McCall.
Under the direction of Bryan Bergeron, Pirates of Penzance will run for three weekends, from March 13 through 29. With plenty of laughs for the whole family, Pirates of Penzance is suitable for all ages.
Dramatist W. S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan collaborated on 14 comic operas between 1871 and 1896, with Pirates of Penzance one of the most frequently performed, translated and parodied of all their works.
Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m, Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m.. A special 2 p.m. Saturday matinee has been added on March 28. Adult tickets to all shows are $25, Senior/Military/Student tickets are $22.
Children 12 and under are $10. Tickets are available at the door or through the theatre website at SurfsidePlayhouse.com.
The 250-seat Surfside Playhouse, “Where the Beach Meets the Stage,” is west on South Fifth Street from Highway A1A and located at 301 Ramp Road in Cocoa Beach, at the northwest corner of Brevard Avenue and Ramp Road.

Artistic Director for the Surfside Players, Bryan Bergeron wants the audience to know this isn’t their grandfather’s Pirates of Penzance.
“Gilbert and Sullivan’s work certainly stands on its own. Written approximately 140 years ago, the music still resonates and comedy plays well to modern audiences,” said Bergeron.
“This doesn’t mean that extra comedic interpretations, funny bits and music can’t be added for the sake of fun. After all, that’s what we do here at Surfside Playhouse…Fun!”
The Surfside Playhouse is home to the Surfside Players, a troupe performing continuously for beachside audiences since first established in 1959. Now celebrating their 60th Season, the Playhouse presents a full schedule of self-produced shows and community performances each year.
Flex passes are still available for the balance of the 2019-20 season. To view the season lineup, visit the theatre website at SurfsidePlayhouse.com or call 321-783-3127.
