BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a deputy-involved shooting that resulted in an armed man being fatally shot Wednesday morning at The Brennity at Melbourne Senior Living facility in Viera.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to the assisted living facility on the 7400 block of Orchestra Lane around 6:40 a.m., regarding a man who was threatening to harm himself.

When the deputies arrived at the scene, they learned that the man had concealed a firearm and displayed it to a facility employee who then ran from the area.

As the deputies approached they heard a shot and began speaking with the armed man, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

“The man raised the firearm and in response to the deadly threat, one deputy discharged his duty weapon striking the man,” said Tod Goodyear of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

“The man was then transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.”

The autopsy on the individual will be conducted by the Brevard County Medical Examiner’s Office

The investigation is ongoing as BCSO agents are interviewing witnesses and Crime Scene Investigators are collecting evidence at the scene.

At this time, the Sheriff’s Office is not releasing the names of the deputies involved or the man who died in the incident.

The deputy who shot the man has been placed on paid administrative leave as is customary in officer-involved shootings.
