Cocoa Beach Police Chief Scott Rosenfeld: ‘There Will Be Consequences’ for Violators of Litter Laws

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA – As restrictions are becoming more relaxed during this pandemic, the City of Cocoa Beach is beginning to see an influx of day-trippers to our beaches, along with piles of unlawfully discarded trash in their wake.
This will not be tolerated. A violation of our litter law will result in a $250 citation.
As our busy call volume allows, Cocoa Beach Police Officers and Beach Rangers will be focusing on litter violations in the days and weeks ahead in an effort to educate the public and mitigate this repulsive and disrespectful behavior.
Parking Enforcement Specialists and other “eyes and ears” will assist in this effort.
“Our community works very hard to be stewards of environmental sustainability,” said Cocoa Beach Police Chief Scott Rosenfeld.

Anyone who observes a litter offense may contact the Cocoa Beach Police Department at 321-868-3251 with a description and location. Keep in mind, a Police Officer or Code Enforcement Officer must witness the violation to take enforcement action.
City Ord. #1600 – Ch.15; Sec. 15-34 Littering
(b) No person shall leave or deposit any trash, refuse or debris on the ocean beach, sea dune area, any public dune crossover, or any public place or public property. Any such trash, refuse or debris shall be placed, when available, in a container designated for such purpose. If there is no receptacle, or if the receptacle is full, all trash or refuse must be removed from the beach, sea dune area, public dune crossover, public place or public property. (c) Any person who violates or fails to comply with any provisions of this section “Littering” shall be subject to the following:
(1) The issuance of Class V citation in accordance with the provisions of City Code Chapter 30; or, (2) Enforcement by other means including, but not limited to: a summons; a notice to appear in the county or circuit court; an arrest; an action before the special magistrate/code enforcement board; or a civil action for injunctive relief.
