If you’re looking forward to your trip to Canberra here are a few tips guaranteed to make your stay a wonderful experience and help you save some money in the process.

Book in advance

If you’re going to the Australian capital city on a whim that might cost you a pretty penny, but you can save a lot on airfare by booking your trip a few months in advance.

Also, if you’re flying to Sidney first you might be tempted to take the one-hour flight to Canberra. However, this can be rather expensive. The best choice is to go by bus. It only costs $40 AUD and you get there in less than three hours.

Use local cabs

If you’re planning on a short stay in Canberra hiring a car is too much of a hassle, while relying on public transport can cause a lot of headaches and wasted time. Also, in many cases buses don’t take you close enough to a major attraction and you’ll have to go on foot.

To avoid being scammed, use a reputable local cab company. You can make a canberra taxi booking by phone (make sure to save the number to your smartphone) or you can use the app. Keep in mind that public transport stops operating early in the evening and you will need a cab to get back to your hotel.

Choose your lodgings carefully

If you travel light and plan to spend your day out and about what you need basically is a place to sleep. Don’t bother booking a fancy hotel for that when you can easily look for a budget hotel or even a hostel.

If you’re planning to spend more than a couple of days in Canberra you should look for an apartment. Most serviced apartments have a small kitchen and a fridge so you can prepare a light evening meal and save some money.

Use a local mobile company

When traveling to another country it’s always smart to buy a prepaid card for your mobile phone and save a lot on roaming fees for calls and mobile data usage.

Also, look up every location that offers free Wi-Fi and there are plenty of those in Canberra.

Stock up on the national currency

Check the exchange rates before leaving on your trip. It’s always a good idea to have some Australian Dollars on you when you land in Canberra.

You can use major credit cards in most hotels, shopping malls and restaurants, but you will also need some cash for small shops or to buy souvenirs.

If you want to get the best rate always go to a local bank to exchange money.

You can, of course, use the ATMs around the city at all hours, but you should know that some of them charge up to 15% of the withdrawal amount.

Free tourist attractions

Canberra is a great city for tourists as many of the city’s attractions offer free entrance. Make a list of all the museums and exhibitions you can visit for free before leaving home and look up the places that also offer free guided tours, which provide a lot of information and historical background.
