BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — A deadly early-morning crash along Interstate 95 in Brevard County left one man dead and a woman seriously injured Tuesday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 6 a.m. on April 28 in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 near mile marker 191 at Wickham Road.
FHP investigators say an 81-year-old man from Port St. Lucie was driving a 2017 Dodge Journey northbound in the inside lane when he approached slowed traffic.
Ahead of him, a 2015 Mack semi tractor-trailer, driven by a 39-year-old Palm Bay man, had come to a stop due to congestion.
According to the FHP report, the Dodge driver failed to stop and slammed into the rear of the semi. The impact proved fatal.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that next of kin have been notified.
A 75-year-old female passenger from Port St. Lucie, who was wearing a seatbelt, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The semi driver was not injured and remained at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by FHP, with assistance from a crash investigator and a homicide investigator, which is standard protocol in fatal traffic incidents.
Traffic in the area experienced delays during the morning commute as troopers worked to clear the scene.
