Eastern Florida State College Women’s Tennis Team Place Sixth in the National Championship Tournament

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Eastern Florida State College women’s tennis team’s run in the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament ended last week.

The Titans finished in sixth place overall with 26 points.

Freshman Kayla Greco made it to the semifinals at No. 3 singles, beating Iowa Central Community College’s Juliana Vidal and the No. 4 seed Chiara Matteodo of Seward to get to the semifinals before falling to the No. 1 seed Violet Apisah from Tyler Junior College 6-2, 6-0 on Tuesday.

Greco is the third player to make it to the semifinals at the national tournament.

Greco teamed with Ivett Castenada in No. 2 singles, also advancing to the semifinals.

The duo entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed and defeated Iowa Central Community College’s Sofia Andrade and Rebecca Van der Lee 6-0, 6-2, and then the No. 3 seed of Lucia Popluharova and Maria Garcia Pulido of Seward Community College to reach the semifinals.

They lost to No. 2 seed Magda Tuells and Isadora Oliveira from Hillsborough Community College 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals.

Castenada and Greco became the first doubles team from Eastern Florida State College to play in the national tournament semifinals.

“The girls did really well,” Eastern Florida State College women’s tennis coach Bobby Cashman said. “Everyone fought hard this week. I thought the ladies peaked at the right time. They put in the work and it showed this week.”

It is the second time in the past three seasons that the women’s tennis team qualified for the national tournament.
