(NHC) — What was formerly tropical depression three of the hurricane season, has been upgraded as of 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, by the National Hurricane Center to Tropical Storm Chantal.
A Tropical Storm is a tropical cyclone that has maximum sustained surface winds ranging from 39-73 mph.
Chantal continued to move north in the Atlantic coast area, maintaining maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center’s fifth advisory.
The storm had a minimum central pressure of 1006 millibars and was tracking north at a speed of 7 miles per hour.
NHC has been closely monitoring Chantal’s progress as it moves through warm waters, which could continue to support its tropical storm strength in the coming days. Residents along the Gulf Coast and in parts of the southeastern United States have been advised to remain vigilant as the storm progresses.

The National Hurricane Center continues to issue advisories and updates on Chantal’s path, urging communities within its potential impact area to review preparedness plans and stay tuned to official forecasts.
For the latest updates and safety information, residents are encouraged to monitor alerts from the National Hurricane Center.
