The decision to raise a baby on formula is not one to be made lightly. Science has come a long way, but it never entirely does a 100% job of replicating what’s made in nature.

A Sugar-Based Diet?

One thing you will never find in the breast milk of humans, or any other species for that matter, is corn syrup. So why are American formula manufacturers put corn syrup in their formula?

The carbohydrates in natural breast milk are primarily supplied by lactose., But for some reason, US formulas are full of processed sweeteners such as corn syrup, maltodextrin, or even plain old table sugar, maltodextrin. It’s no big mystery why they aren’t expensive sweeteners.

Natural breast milk also contains fats and proteins. European formulas simulate this by adding whey to the mix. 

Higher Standards For Organic Ingredients

For whatever reason, baby formula is an area of the market where the Food and Drug Administration has set out only essential guidance about what can be included and why can’t. 

Their regulations are painted in broad strokes. Sure, it does some good, but there are no delicate delineations about which fats, proteins, and carbohydrates can be included. Which is how cheap processed sweeteners find their way into the final product, such as corn syrup and glucose syrup.

The European Commission is much more granular about acceptable ingredients in baby formula.

■ If the formula already has intact milk proteins, sucrose is not allowed as an additive.

■ The carbohydrate content must be a minimum of 30% lactose, no filler.

■ The European Commission forbids preservatives that are usually allowed in American baby formula.

Lower Risk of Diabetes and Childhood Obesity

If the carbohydrate source in your baby’s formula isn’t lactose, and the pancreas has to work a little harder to break it down. And until the pancreas has done its job, your baby’s blood sugar rises faster.

Diabetes is an American pandemic that nobody wants to talk about, and delaying the introduction of processed sweets to your baby will offset the chance of your children becoming diabetic.
