(24/7 SPORTS) – The University of Louisville running back Jalen Mitchell had an opportunity at the end of last season for the Cardinals and he took advantage of it.

The 5-foot-10, 221-pound Mitchell played in nine games but it wasn’t until Javian Hawkins opted out for the rest of the season and Hassan Hall and Maurice Burkley were dealing with injuries that Mitchell was thrust into the spotlight.

He responded with 20 carries for 168 yards in the season-ending win over Wake Forest.

“We’ve been at each other’s necks every single day of camp,” Mitchell said of the competition.

“Everybody is making plays, everybody is doing their best to put their best foot forward trying to position themselves…My mindset every day is to think I am the last back on the list. That I am the last option.

“If I can think I am the last option, then I push myself to be more than that and that’s when I succeed.”

Satterfield said he expects that Mitchell will be able to “carry the load.” He rushed 52 times for 347 yards last season. He had two touchdowns and led the team with 6.7 yards a carry.

“He’ll be a workhorse for us,” Satterfield said. “You saw in that last game that he can carry it for us.”
