BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – Brevard County Commissioner John Tobia from District 3 was not happy with some citizens in his community for not taking vaccines, specifically government workers after he expressed his frustration in the Commission chamber at Tuesday’s Brevard County Commissioners meeting in Viera.

During the four-minute rant, Tobia responded to a measure brought forward to the commission that would incentivize government employees to take the jab, in exchange, they would receive administrative leave benefits up to 10 days, should they be diagnosed with COVID-19. People who chose not to take the non-FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine would not be granted the benefit of administrative leave, should they be diagnosed with COVID-19.

Below is a transcription of Commissioner Tobia’s statement on the measure and COVID-19:

“I’m tired of the social aspect of things. If you want a social aspect of things, go to Church and I’ll support you whatever Church you go to. But I think speakers are failing to understand. And Unfortunately, some of the members up here on the board, having a government job is not a right,” said Commissioner Tobia.

“It’s a damn privilege. And you know what? If you don’t like it, go somewhere else. You have other opportunities. I cannot tell you how many signs I see outside that says Help wanted.

And you know what? If you don’t want to be a team player, if you want to put constituents at risk, you know, you may not like the science. My guess is you’re not a doctor. My guess is you’re not a nurse. My guess is you didn’t do very well in biology class because when the CDC says 99.97% of people that are in the hospital right now are there without vaccinations, what you fail to understand is that these we are self-insured here.

So every one of these and it’s not nice to call people morons, but I’m going to call you a moron that doesn’t get the shot and ends up in the hospital is costing about 14,000 dollars in taxpayer.

So you want to go, I support you, but just stop the whining. Stop the complaining and quit your job.

We don’t want you here. If you are going to put a taxpayers at risk and be members of the public at risk so you can read any document you want.

But we’re the one that has to come back to you guys and say, you know what?

We need a tax increase, because Here’s what let me. There are more than 70,000 hours right now of government employees that have been out on sick leave. That means time and a half or double time, or God forbid, these damn unions triple time that we’re having to pick up. So I’m sorry to get impassioned on the star and stuff, but I tell you what, if we stop incentivizing, we shouldn’t have to do this. You should care about the people that you serve.

You should care about science. This is not a partisan issue. This is a management issue. I’m disappointed it even has to come here. I appreciate everyone’s opinion up here, but I can’t imagine.

I can’t imagine that an officer in the military gives an order and you have a bunch of enlisted folks that set up there and question that order. And we’re in a parent military. We have an organization up here with an individual at the top who sits to my right is trying to save taxpayer money. And you guys, many of you guys. And I’m sorry to get a passionate on this stuff, but we’re going to have to come back to you and say that this is going to 70,000 hours.

So about half of that came from firefighters, by the way, a wonderful Union that we have that we’re currently involved with. By the way, that has a vaccination rate at 27-percent.

This is absolutely disgusting. This is abhor. I strongly support this.

In fact, I would go a step further and say, if you don’t want a vaccine, guess what? Either get the hell out or we’re not going to provide you with insurance.

But unfortunately, the federal government has not has put laws in place that preclude that from happening. So I think incentivizing this type of behavior is very good. I will be strongly supporting this. Unfortunately, it sounds like this will be going down.

The measure was voted down by the commission after a 3-2 vote, as Tobia and Lober were the only members who voted in favor of the measure.
