BREVARD COUNTY • WEST MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Two West Melbourne police officers and two Palm Bay police officers were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation after the officers jumped into action to rescue a man from a burning vehicle on Thursday morning near the Hampton Inn, located at 4520 Durham Drive.

Flames were visible as the officers approached the vehicle, which appeared to have crashed.

According to police, the officers observed smoke billowing out of the vehicle, making it difficult for the officers to determine if anyone was inside.

As they approached the burning vehicle, they could hear a man calling for help, and working together, the officers pulled the man from the vehicle.

The victim was taken to a local hospital to treat his injuries and is in stable condition.

“Had it not been for the swift action of these officers, things may have ended differently,” said West Melbourne police officials.

Three of the four officers have been released from the hospital, and the fourth remains hospitalized for observation.

The victim has not yet been identified and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
