Florida Tech Aeronautics Member Shem Malmquis Participates at Nuclear Regulatory Commission Conference

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech’s College of Aeronautics faculty member Shem Malmquist participated in a panel discussion on hazards associated with nuclear automation at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s 34th Annual Regulatory Information Conference last month.
Malmquist, a 777 captain and fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, participated in, “Hazard Analysis for Nuclear Automation: Defeating Digital Demons.” The panel featured guests from MIT, McMaster University, General Motors, and elsewhere.
The panel explored newer methods for hazard analysis because “the potential for hazardous interactions is increasing with trends toward more networking and sharing of resources across systems of different criticality and across redundant divisions,” according to organizers.
The conference brings together NRC officials with participants from industry, other government agencies, international bodies, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders to discuss topics of mutual interest.
It remains the largest annual meeting hosted by the NRC, with numerous participants from the United States and dozens of other countries.
