Melbourne Police Traffic Homicide Investigation Underway After Fatal Vehicle vs. Motorized Wheelchair Crash

Melbourne police officers responded to Lake Washington Road and North Wickham Road in response to a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a 2018 Kia Niro and a pedestrian on a motorized wheelchair on Saturday, August 27.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A pedestrian on a motorized wheelchair and their dog were killed in a vehicle crash Saturday that involved a 2018 Kia Niro on Lake Washington Road and North Wickham Road.

According to Melbourne Police Cmdr. Mark Renkens, upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered the pedestrian had sustained life-threatening injuries and a canine she was with had succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

Cmdr. Renkens identified the victim as 74-year-old Mary Tuck of Melbourne.

According to Traffic Homicide Investigator Officer Livingston, Tuck was transported to a local hospital by Brevard County Fire Rescue.

Cmdr. Renkens said the initial investigation revealed the pedestrian was attempting to cross the northbound lanes of North Wickham Road, just north of the intersection of Lake Washington Road and North Wickham Road, when she traveled into the path of the northbound Kia Niro and was struck.

“The investigation is ongoing to determine if alcohol, drugs, or a medical episode were a factor in this crash. The crash is still under investigation,” said Traffic Homicide Investigator Officer Livingston.

The Traffic Enforcement Unit is currently investigating this crash as a Traffic Homicide Investigation.
