WATCH: Melbourne Police Chief David Gillespie released a “Thank You” message to the community for their support regarding the officer-involved shooting that took place on Friday.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Melbourne Police Chief David Gillespie released a “Thank You” message to the community for their support regarding the officer-involved shooting that took place on Friday.

Melbourne police officials identified Lukas E. Alves, 28, as the suspect who shot a police officer on Friday evening at the Suburban Extended Stay Hotel at 1125 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Alves, 28, was charged with Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer, Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling, and Aggravated Assault with a Firearm.

Melbourne Police Chief David Gillespie said during a press conference that officers were called to the hotel for a well-being check around 5 p.m. and spoke to a suspect who had barricaded himself inside a room.

Melbourne police officials have identified Lukas E. Alves, 28, as the suspect who shot a police officer on Friday evening at the Suburban Extended Stay Hotel at 1125 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

One of the police officers was struck during the shooting incident and transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The officer’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.

“The subject fired through the door toward law enforcement,” said Gillespie, who went on to say the officer was hit in the chest that struck a bulletproof vest. Gillespie said two officers returned fire, but there were no other injuries.

Crisis Negotiation Unit officers and SWAT officers were called out to assist with the incident where two people inside the hotel room, who were involved in the shooting, eventually surrendered and are now in police custody.

The injured Melbourne police officer is a 26-year veteran of the department, assigned to Patrol. The officer’s name has not been released.

The two officers who discharged their firearms during the incident have been placed on routine administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
