Melbourne Police Officers Engaged in Gun Battle During Domestic Violence Call

Suspect retreated into the residence and began firing his handgun inside the residence

Melbourne police officers were engaged in a gun battle after responding to a disturbance in progress at 4365 Millicent Circle Saturday morning at approximately 1:55 a.m. Officers arrived on the scene and confronted  Anthony O. Rivera, 32, of Melbourne, who was armed with a handgun.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Melbourne police officers were engaged in a gun battle after responding to a disturbance in progress at 4365 Millicent Circle Saturday morning at approximately 1:55 a.m. 

According to Melbourne Police Department Cmdr. Mark Renkens, officers were dispatched after a woman said her boyfriend was attempting to stab her tires.
Officers arrived on the scene and confronted  Anthony O. Rivera, 32, of Melbourne, who was armed with a handgun.

“The male (Rivera) fired several rounds at officers, at which point one officer returned fire,” said Cmdr. Renkens.

Rivera then retreated into the residence at 4365 Millicent Circle, where he began firing his handgun inside the residence.

“Members of the Patrol and the Community Response Team established a perimeter around the house,” said Cmdr. Renkens.

“At that time, the male (Rivera) fired a second volley of shots from the second-floor window of the residence toward officers and other homes.”

Members of the Palm Bay Police Department and Brevard County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene, as well as members of the Melbourne Police Department SWAT team and the Crisis Negotiations Unit.

Rivera voluntarily gave himself up and was taken into custody and no one was injured during the incident.

The area around the residence is an active crime scene being worked by members of the Criminal Investigations Division. The involved officer involved will be placed on routine administrative leave.

Rivera is being charged with Domestic Violence, Aggravated Battery, Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer, Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling and Criminal Mischief.
