PUBLIC SERVICE: K9 Copper Keeps Cocoa Police Department’s Mission Going with New Partner

Community Engagement Officer Cierra Johnson is now Copper’s third partner

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Cocoa Police K9 Copper, the American Black and Tan Coonhound that was donated to the City of Cocoa in 2016, has many years of service left to the residents of the Cocoa community and will continue to serve with a new partner in the Community Engagement Unit where Copper is currently assigned.

“Contrary to statements posted on social media, K9 Copper, the beloved Community Relations Ambassador for the Cocoa Police Department, is not being taken away from his former handler or retiring from service,” said a Cocoa polices spokesperson.

“Copper’s former handler submitted his resignation and is moving on to pursue other career opportunities.”

Community Engagement Officer Cierra Johnson is now Copper’s third partner since he began with the department. K9 Copper and Officer Johnson have already worked together and shared an office together in the Community Engagement Unit.

“They have participated in many events together and will continue to win the hearts and minds of everyone they meet,” said a Cocoa polices spokesperson.

Copper became a registered therapy dog after successfully completing the Paws and Stripes program started by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

In 2017, K9 Copper was presented with the American Kennel Club Award for Canine Excellence for his work in the Cocoa community. He is also trained to track and help find people who are lost, missing and endangered.

Copper is a beloved member of the Cocoa Community and will continue to support the Cocoa Police Department and the community through his public outreach efforts.
