BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Healthcare continues to be one of the largest industries on the Space Coast and the Brevard Heart Foundation recognized 15 awardees from across Brevard County who are serving patients with compassion and dedication during the 2nd Annual Heart of a Hero Awards Gala on March 24.

The 2023 Heart of a Hero awardees included Linda Jones-Battle, Theresa Carney, Marcilla Dupree, Fanny Estinvil, Joy Hackett, Joe Helme, Adalberto Henriquez, Lillian Holder, Paul Kolarik, Sol Madlambayan, Londa Maitland, Felicia Prince, Mohan Shah, Sara Shaw, and Kimberly Sloman.

These awardees were recognized for their service to our community and represented various fields in the healthcare sector.

“Each year, we’ve seen this awards program grow, and it becomes increasingly more challenging to narrow down the field of awardees,” said Diana Adams, Executive Director of Brevard Heart Foundation, as she addressed the sold-out event.

“This year’s awardees have such joy and passion that they bring to their roles, and it is evidenced by the community that showed up to support and celebrate their achievement,”

Nominations for the Heart of a Hero Awards were open to the public last fall, where members of the public can share stories of how healthcare professionals impacted their lives or the lives of others.

The awardees chosen and recognized at the gala included doctors, nurses, mental health providers, hospice professionals, and program directors and a piece of each nomination story was shared as the awardee was called to the stage to receive their award.

The mission of the Brevard Heart Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, is to improve and promote healthcare for Brevard County citizens through programs that target identified community needs. Above, the Brevard Heart Foundation Board includes Travis Proctor, Diana Adams, John Hopkins, Chris White, Abbey Redden, Annmarie Waite, Brenda Britten, and Kevin Campbell.

In addition to the Heart of a Hero award given to each awardee, three additional awards were given to honorees who exemplified leadership, volunteerism, and going above and beyond to serve patients.

The Excellence in Leadership award presented by Mandala Foundation was given to Dr. Kimberly Sloman of  the Florida Tech/Scott Center for Autism Treatment for her leadership and impact on the lives of families and children with autism.

Health First presented Dr. Adalberto Henriquez of Space Coast Volunteers in Medicine with the Volunteer of the Year for his many volunteer hours in Brevard County and abroad, meeting the healthcare needs of underserved populations.

Adams gave the final award, Superhero of the Year, to Londa Maitland of St. Francis Reflections Lifestage Care for going above and beyond the call of duty on a regular basis for patients, families, colleagues, and others in the community.

Along with recognizing the work and dedication of local healthcare professionals, Brevard Heart Foundation also supports healthcare initiatives on the Space Coast that meet identified community needs, as well as invests in the future of quality healthcare through their local scholarship program.

Their scholarship applications are available HERE and are due by May 31. To be eligible, students need to be a Brevard County resident or have graduated from a high school while living in Brevard County and be enrolled or accepted to a healthcare degree program.
