OBITUARY: Long-time Brevard Public Schools Administrator and Coach Greg McGrew, 70, Passed Away Aug. 3

Originally from West Viginia, moved his family to Brevard County in 1990

Greg McGrew, 70, passed away on August 3, 2023. Greg retired in 2018, and was a longtime educator, coach and administrator in West Virginia and Brevard County. Along with coaching football and baseball, his career saw him as an athletic director at Bayside High School and Heritage High School.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Gregory Allen McGrew of Satellite Beach, Florida, passed away on August 3, 2023, at the age of 70.

Greg was born December 13, 1952, and grew up in Red House, West Virginia. An athletic young person, Greg played college football at West Virginia State University. He married the love of his life, Linda Raines, on August 24, 1974.

Greg and Linda started an amazing journey together, raising their family in Teays Valley, West Virginia.

Greg was an educator, athletic director, and coach and had a passion for working with young people. He coached both football and baseball at Winfield High School, in Winfield, West Virginia and at Hurricane High School, in Hurricane, West Virginia.

In 1990, the McGrew’s moved to Brevard County to settle in Melbourne, Florida. It was then that Greg started his professional career on the Space Coast.

Along with teaching at Palm Bay High School, Greg also coached football and baseball. He later became an administrator and served as athletic director at Bayside High School and Heritage High School.

He retired from Brevard Public Schools in 2018.

There was nothing Greg would not do for his family. He loved them dearly and spent as much time with them as possible. Greg also enjoyed surf fishing, biking, RV camping, boating and photography. And, of course, he loved Florida Gators football!

Greg was preceded in death by his parents, William Frederick McGrew, Sr., and Betty Jane (Meeks) McGrew.

Left to remember this amazing man are his wife, Linda Raines McGrew of Satellite Beach, Florida; his children, Amy McGrew of Cocoa Beach, Florida, Jeffrey McGrew (Kay) of Gainesville, Florida, Corey McGrew (Katie) of Indian Harbour Beach, Florida; his grandchildren, Jeff’s daughters, Kora McGrew and Lily McGrew and Corey’s son, Bodhi McGrew; and his siblings, William Frederick McGrew, Jr. (deceased), Connie McGrew of St. Albans, West Virginia and Bruce McGrew of Winfield, West Virginia.

Greg was destined to work in education. He loved working with young people and had a positive impact on thousands of those with whom he came into contact. Greg McGrew left us way too soon and will be sorely missed.

There will be a private service.
