Profitable Businesses You Can Start in Kuwait

By  //  February 21, 2024

Perhaps you are one of those people living in Kuwait who love the idea of entrepreneurship but have been stuck deciding which Kuwait business ideas to explore.

With only about 25% of businesses making it to their 15th year, according to Investopedia, it is natural to be careful about diving into just any business. As an entrepreneur, you want to focus on businesses where you can be reasonably confident of consistent consumer demand and profit.

In this article, we will highlight five of such businesses you can consider starting in Kuwait and what you need to be successful at them.

Selling antique and vintage items

“Lots of people love collecting antiques to display in their homes,” according to Mohammad Al-Humaidhi, owner of Beit Al-Cedra vintage shop. “Some of them don’t even have space in their houses due to the number of antiques they own, and because these items are precious to them, they refuse to sell them.”

The desire to connect to the past will always remain an integral part of the human experience. If you can create and collect antiques and vintage items (furniture, home accessories, clothing, kitchen items, etc), you will find a growing market in Kuwait.

You can differentiate yourself from other players by focusing on a particular niche (furniture, for example) and then providing a wide range of variety within that niche. In this way, you will become the go-to person which will allow you to even charge a premium.

Selling luxury clothing and accessories

The luxury market in Kuwait is the third largest in the GCC market, according to Vogue Business. It goes on to describe consumers of these luxuries as “savvy, sophisticated, and hyper-local.”

You can enter this market by importing global luxury brands and reselling to Kuwaitis.

Alternatively, if you have the skills or know those who do, you can invest in a local luxury brand, especially one that will reflect the culture of locals better than foreign brands can.

Kuwaitis love fashion and if you offer them quality products that will make them look beautiful, they are willing to pay a premium.

Cooking gas refilling

With the global rise in the cost of living, many are looking for ways to save money. One tip that many are embracing is the need to cook at home more frequently.

In Kuwait, cooking gas is the preferred method for cooking; therefore, as long as the need to eat remains and a better alternative has not been produced, the demand for cooking gas will continue to increase.

By starting a cooking gas refilling business, you can tap into this demand and make money.

The key is focusing on residential communities where refilling stations are very few or even non-existent. If the cost of refilling from you is less than the cost of taking a drive to a station in another community to refill, then you can be sure of building a local base of buyers.

Boat renting

Depending on the type of boat, you can make up to thousands of dollars a day renting out boats in Kuwait.

If you have a boat you rarely use, you can list it on sites like getmyboat.com, clickandboat.com, and boatcrowd.com

Even if you don’t have a boat, you can consider buying one, if you have the money, and renting it out on any of these sites for daily rental income.

In addition to using these sites, you can partner with local tourist companies who can also send customers your way.

Translation service

Are you proficient in both English and Arabic? If yes, you can consider starting a translation business where you can translate documents, articles, and speeches from English to Arabic and vice versa.

Foreigners doing business with Kuwaitis often require the expertise of translators who can make transactions go smoothly. If you are very good, foreigners will even be willing to pay a premium for your service.

The good thing about translators is that you can get referrals and word-of-mouth advertisements for free from those who have worked with you.

Starting your business in Kuwait

The business registration process in Kuwait has been simplified. All you need to do is choose a business name, select a business structure, register with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and get a business license.

You will also need a payment system like Kem which allows you to easily, quickly, and cost-effectively collect real-time payments both online and offline through QR codes.

Finally, irrespective of the business you start, you need to put efforts into creating a marketing strategy. Even if you don’t have a competitor (which is unlikely), you need a solid marketing strategy to establish your brand in the minds of your target market.
