Mary has earned a reputation for her passion, dedication and warmth

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA—Madine “Mary” McCurry is officially the longest-tenured associate at Health First, celebrating 61 years on November 6. With over six decades of service, Mary has earned a reputation for her passion, dedication, and warmth.
Mary began her career at Health First in 1963 – just a year after Health First’s Cape Canaveral Hospital opened its doors. In those early days, staff continuity was rare.
“My first job was working in private duty, and I was referred for the nurse’s aide job (now called a Certified Nursing Assistant or CNA) by one of the directors at the time. Most of the nurses then had husbands stationed at Patrick Air Force Base, so they only stayed short-term, and hospital leaders were looking for someone who would stay here longer,” Mary recalled.
She fulfilled that expectation … and more.
Evening Care Companion
After serving as a CNA for 48 years, Mary transitioned to the role of Patient Observer in 2011. She floats between Health First’s four hospitals, bringing her wealth of experience and compassion to every interaction. “I keep an eye on patients overnight and call for the nurses when needed,” Mary explained.
Her colleagues hold her in high esteem, recognizing her influence and dedication. Chinetia Brown, a Patient Service Specialist at Cape Canaveral Hospital, describes Mary as “an extraordinary and dedicated Health First worker”—and a true friend.
“When I see Mary early in the morning after her late-night shift ends, she still has a smile on her face and is never too tired to leave encouraging words. She has helped make this company successful while positively impacting colleagues and patients,” said Brown.
61 Years of Dedication
Lavana Scott, also a Patient Service Specialist at Cape Canaveral Hospital, reflects on Mary’s unwavering commitment.
“Day in and day out, she sets a standard of diligence and care that serves as a model for us all. Whether she is navigating the complexities of patient care or mentoring new team members, her dedication is evident in everything she does,” said Scott.
Jodi Stephens from Associate Development added that Mary’s positive impact extends beyond her department.
“She is a wonderful human who has dedicated her life to helping our community and our organization.”
Decades of Fond Memories
Mary’s journey has been marked by many fond memories, including witnessing the development of Cape Canaveral Hospital.
“It used to just be a tiny piece of land surrounded by water, and they said, ‘We’re building a hospital here.’ The hospital was small, and everyone knew everyone’s name,” Mary recalled.
“One of my favorite memories was seeing a former administrator out planting flowers around the hospital with his wife because they wanted to make it look nice.”
Laura Cornett, Associate Wellness Nurse, adds, “Mary certainly chose the right field where kindness and empathy are key to quality care. How blessed we are to still have Mary delivering her special touch to our patients!”

A Legacy of Compassionate Care
Kate Sims, Vice President of Experience and Culture at Health First, shares, “Mary’s 61 years of service has shown us what it means to steward our mission at Health First. Her stories remind us of the vital role compassionate care plays in every moment. We are deeply grateful for her unwavering dedication to those we serve.”
Mary’s enduring compassion and excellence exemplify the values that make Health First a cherished organization in Brevard County. Her legacy of quality care and remarkable impact will undoubtedly continue to inspire both colleagues and patients for years to come. As the longest-tenured associate at Health First, Mary feels a deep sense of pride. “It feels good. I like working for Health First, and I love working with people.”
