Empowering Through Education: Workshops Promoting Safe Sexual Health Practices in Florida
By Space Coast Daily // May 20, 2025

At the core of Hope & Help of Central Florida’s mission is the commitment to eliminating barriers to care and support for individuals affected by HIV, AIDS, and other STIs. Challenges such as poverty, social isolation, and persistent stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS often prevent individuals from accessing vital information to protect their health, as well as the essential support they need if they contract an STI.
Hope & Help was founded in 1988 by a group of friends who had banded together to help a friend with AIDS, and grew out of this time of coming together for a common good. Today, it is one of the state’s leading organizations, providing medical care, communal support groups, prevention education, and outreach for those with positive HIV/AIDS diagnoses.
Breaking down barriers
The heart of Hope and Help’s mission is to eliminate barriers to care and support for people affected by HIV, AIDS, or other STIs. Barriers such as poverty, a lack of social connection, and the enduring stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS can keep people from not only getting the information they need to stay safe, but also the help they need if they do contract an STI.
Hope & Help is reaching some of Central Florida’s most vulnerable people through robust prevention and outreach programs. According to studies, over 14,000 people are currently living with HIV in Orlando alone, with local Black and Hispanic populations having seen the most significant rise in new infections. In addition, people facing housing or food insecurity are especially at risk of not only contracting HIV, but also of not having access to help when they do.
Young people are emerging as an especially vulnerable population, as their access to education can be limited, and many may feel they have no one to turn to with questions or fears. Much of Hope & Help’s outreach has focused on this group, hoping to meet them where they are and provide the support they need to make informed choices.
Through an integration of medical treatment, HIV/STI preventative treatment, support groups, and community outreach, Hope & Help has been able to reach these vulnerable Floridians, making a marked difference in the lives of those who may have been forgotten or overlooked in the past.
From education to prevention
Education through workshops, classes, and community outreach programs can go a long way in preventing HIV and other STI outbreaks, not only among younger populations but also in all areas of the community. The workshops and other education programs offered through Hope & Help’s team of experts focus on comprehensive education about how to best protect oneself, get help if one feels at risk, and help mitigate the stigmas surrounding these conditions in the community. The more people learn about HIV, AIDS, and other STIs, the less misinformation can spread.
Through workshops that provide up-to-date information, Hope & Help has provided information about the value of testing and prevention. When people have the right information, they become empowered to make informed decisions about their health going forward.
Additionally, with more testing availability and education that allows people to understand the value of testing and prevention, people are getting diagnosed earlier. As a result of this early intervention, their health outcomes are also improving.
Hope & Help’s workshops can be especially valuable for younger generations, who may have missed the initial HIV/AIDS epidemic at its peak and may be more prone to fall victim to misinformation due to a lack of proper education about these conditions. What someone in an older generation may consider well-known information could be a revelation for a younger person just starting to learn about HIV and AIDS prevention.
A community service
Hope & Help has become well-established in the Central Florida community as a source of comprehensive care, education, and support. Through workshops and other outreach, including events and participation in community gatherings, Hope & Help connects community members with resources that are essential to remaining healthy and safe, such as free condoms and free HIV testing, and information about breakthroughs such as PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis).
Workshops that include peer educators can further connect marginalized communities. These peer-led learning models can increase adherence to safe sex practices and make people more comfortable participating in a learning opportunity.
The education opportunities offered by Hope & Help aim to equip the community with the knowledge necessary to keep themselves safe while also contributing to the eventual eradication of HIV altogether. The organization’s ultimate mission is to educate and empower.
Hope & Help’s workshops are particularly valuable for younger generations, who may not have experienced the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and are therefore more susceptible to misinformation due to limited education on these issues. Information that may be considered common knowledge by older generations can be transformative for young people who are only beginning to learn about HIV and AIDS prevention.
