National Weather Service: Potential to Fall Back into Drought in Weeks Ahead for Brevard County

Rainfall since Jan. 1 in Brevard averages 6.56 inches, 4.35 inches below normal

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE,  FLORIDA — The National Weather Service in Melbourne has released a drought update showing some short-term relief across east central Florida, thanks to above-normal rainfall from May 6 to May 12.

Despite this recent improvement, the outlook for the remainder of May remains concerning.

According to the latest data, much of the region continues to experience varying levels of drought, ranging from Abnormally Dry to Extreme Drought conditions.

A small area in the southwestern portion of the region is still classified as being under Exceptional Drought, which is the most severe category.

Rainfall since January 1 in Brevard County averages 6.56 inches, 4.35 inches below normal.

These figures indicate that while certain areas, such as Orlando and Fort Pierce, have seen rainfall surpluses, others, particularly Melbourne, remain significantly drier than average.

Forecasters warn that hot and dry weather is expected to dominate over the next one to two weeks.

These conditions will likely hinder any continued improvement and could worsen drought conditions across the area by late May.

Residents and agricultural stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed on drought conditions and water use advisories through official channels, including the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies.
