Florida ranks in highest strike-related injuries

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Brevard County Fire Rescue is urging residents to stay vigilant as Lightning Safety Awareness Week shines a spotlight on the dangers of severe weather in Florida.
With the Sunshine State experiencing approximately 70 to 100 days annually with at least one thunderstorm, lightning remains a serious threat to public safety.
Officials emphasize a crucial but straightforward message: “If thunder roars, go indoors.”
This guidance is especially important in Florida, which consistently ranks among the states with the highest number of lightning strike-related injuries and fatalities.

Lightning can strike from as far as 10 miles away from a storm. This means if thunder is audible, it is time to seek shelter immediately. Brevard County Fire Rescue reminds all residents and visitors that the best protection is prevention, and being weather-aware can save lives.
As summer storms become more frequent, local officials encourage everyone to stay informed by monitoring weather forecasts, seeking safe shelter when storms approach, and avoiding open areas or tall objects that could attract lightning.
