PETER CRANIS: April Tourist Development Tax Was $2.4 Million – a 10.5% Increase Compared to Last Year

For the year Tourist Development Tax is at nearly $16 million

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – April Tourist Development Tax (TDT) collections have come in at $2.4 million – a very nice 10.5% increase compared to last year’s April ($2.17 million) and a slight 0.7% decrease compared to the April 2023 number of $2.415 million.

It is not surprising that April did well, given the timing of Easter, which fell in late April this year. In fact, when looking at the combination of March and April, our Spring numbers were up 3.3%, reaching nearly $5.5 million compared to just over $5.3 million last Spring.

For the year, we are at nearly $16 million, representing a 3.6% increase over the same period last year. It is interesting to note that we only began surpassing $16 million in total year-end collections back in 2019. These numbers bode well for our Summer season, as typically, if Spring goes well, then Summer follows.

Looking at TDT by type, hotels represented 67% of the total for the month, which is up from the 62.5% of last month. Hotel TDT for the month was nearly $1.6 million, which was 12% up compared to the prior year.

Vacation rentals accounted for 32% of TDT for the month, down from 36% the previous month. Vacation rental revenue for the month was $774k, up 8.3% over the prior year.

In terms of hotel/motel revenue by city, Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral were at 35% of the total for the month and generated $843k in TDT, which was up 10% over the prior year.

Melbourne and the Beaches accounted for 25% of the total and generated $ 627,000 for the month, representing a nearly 16% increase compared to last year. Looking ahead, May is tracking close to May of last year.
