U.S. Coast Guard Base of Miami Beach Holds Change of Command Ceremony

MIAMI BEACH — The crew of Coast Guard Base Miami Beach held a change of command ceremony on Friday at the base.

Capt. Clay McKinney relieved Capt. Roger Omenhiser as commanding officer of Base Miami Beach during the ceremony, which was presided over by Rear Adm. Carola List, commander of Operational Logistics Command.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better district to support,” said Omenhiser.

“Getting to know you and work the mission together has been fantastic. I always felt like I was part of the Seventh District team. To me, our relationship between operations and support was the gold standard.

Thank you for operating under the ‘one team, one fight’ mentality. Thank you for your understanding and appreciation of the mission support world of work. It has been an honor to work alongside you.”

Omenhiser retired following the change of command ceremony after 24 years of service.

“I am honored to join Base Miami Beach and thrilled for the opportunity to contribute to the essential work that ensures mission readiness and success,” said McKinney.

McKinney previously served as the commanding officer of the Civil Engineering Unit Miami.

The change of command ceremony marks the transfer of total responsibility and authority from one individual to another. It is a time-honored tradition conducted before the assembled crew, as well as honored guests and dignitaries, to formally demonstrate the continuity of authority within a command.

Base Miami Beach is composed of over 600 active duty, reserve and civilian personnel, who provide critical mission support to the Seventh Coast Guard District.
