Palm Bay Police Detectives, U.S. Marshals Apprehend 2009 Murder Suspect in Puerto Rico

Luis Colon suspected of fatally shooting woman in front of her apartment as she returned home from work
BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – The Palm Bay Police Department, in collaboration with the United States Marshals Service, has apprehended Luis Colon, who has been wanted in connection with a 2009 Palm Bay homicide.
Palm Bay Police Lt. Virginia Kilmer said the homicide occurred in the city of Palm Bay, where a female victim was fatally shot in front of her apartment as she returned home from work.
“In 2013, a grand jury indicted Colon on charges of First-Degree Felony Murder and Robbery with a Firearm, and a warrant was issued for his arrest; however, Colon remained at large for over a decade,” said Lt. Kilmer.
Last week, investigators received credible information indicating that Colon may be residing in Puerto Rico. A U.S. Marshals Task Force Officer with the Palm Bay Police Department conducted a follow-up investigation, which confirmed Colon’s location.
“Working alongside our partners in Puerto Rico, Colon was taken into custody without incident this morning,” said Lt. Kilmer.
Colo is currently awaiting extradition to Florida, where he will face the original charges.
“The Palm Bay Police Department remains committed to pursuing justice for victims and their families, regardless of how much time has passed,” said Lt. Kilmer.
